Don't forget your glasses to protect your eyes, your lifejacket and a wading stick is useful if you intend to wade.

EA License
As well as your Permit and some identification you need an EA license to fish at Weir Wood. To buy a license click here

Rod & Line?
For Boat or Bank fishing at Weir Wood you will need a single handed fly rod of between 8ft 6ins and 10ft for lines rated anything from 7wt to 9wt. Remember that the heavier the line and the longer the rod the stronger and more expert you need to be to handle it. If you are an any doubt as to what rod and line you should be using come and see us and have a word with our duty manager before rushing out and buying the wrong set up. We have a number of demonstrator rods set up for you to try at the Fishing Lodge.

Line Density?
For fishing throughout the year at Weir Wood you might need anything from a full floater to a hi density fast sinking line depending upon the water temperature and time of year.

Leaders?
Generally with a team of three flies you will need a 15ft leader with droppers tapered down to a 6lb tip.
With sinking lines and heavy flies,it is better to use a single fly off a shorter 9ft tip tapering to 8lbs.

Flies?
Weir Wood has not been Trout fished for 20 or so years and so until we get going we are as much in the dark as you! But in the old days, Weir Wood used to have a spectacular Sedge hatch as well as the usual Damsels, Buzzers, olives and so on, not forgetting the ubiquitous Daddies and Fry imitators in the autumn. We have a comprehensive selection of flies at the fishing lodge for you to top up with on the day if you are short of the current killer pattern!

Accessories?
Fly Boxes: Try the new waterproof floating fly-boxes if you want to keep your selection from getting wet
Nets: Long handle for the boats especially if you are using long leaders and don't forget knotless only.
